The Marshalltown School Board met Monday, a final meeting before the start of school on Tuesday August 23rd. Among the highlights the school board heard from school nurses in the district. Franklin Elementary School Nurse Carol Barlow says social factors have an impact on the level of student health, including immigration, poor housing, poverty and violence. She cited information from the State Department of Education website indicating the level of students that fall below the poverty line is 70.9%. It was also disclosed that school nurses can spend up to 30% of their time on mental health issues. Other highlights of the meeting, the location for bus transfer will be at the same location for now, even though the city will be building a joint police and fire station near West Anson and South Second Streets. That according to School Superintendent Doctor Theron Schutte. Meanwhile the district has hired Joshua Wesley as the new Director of Technology to replace Jeff Weinberg, Wesley will begin his duties on September 1st. Matt Tullis was hired as a Special Ed 2 teacher at Lenihan Intermediate School, he previously was Director of Equity but his job was eliminated during the course of the last school year. The will be an Open House at the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse Tuesday afternoon between 4:30 and 6:30 p-m for a chance for the public to get to know administrators recently hired by the school district.
