The Marshalltown City Council on Monday had a busy meeting. Among the highlights Marshalltown Police Chief Michael Tupper presented Lieutenant badges to recently promoted officers Kyle Stevenson, Rick Belisle and Tricia Thien. Chief Tupper said they were real life superheroes in their day-to-day police work. Family members were on hand to pin the new badges on the police officers uniforms. It was the final meeting for City Administrator, Randy Whetmore who is stepping down to take a similar job in the state of Georgia. Whetmore was lauded for his work by Mayor Jim Lowrance who wished him well. Ann Selness, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department said it was a good summer for the Marshalltown Aquatic Center with attendance up 16% and concession sales up 20%. There was a report on the Ibiza Dance Club downtown which saw the state overturn a denial by the city of its request for a liquor license. City Attorney, Roger Schoell advised the city not to appeal the state`s decision saying it would be a waste of money. Marty Mitchell of the Mitchell Family Funeral Home was recognized for buying out the Aquatic Center on the final day of swimming and allowing 588 people to swim for free. Library Director, Sara Rosenblum says the Marshalltown Public Library will open for the first time on a Sunday on September 18th. Housing and Community Development Director, Michelle Spohnheimer says work will begin soon on the demolition of dilapidated properties in Marshalltown. Asbestos work is done on five properties and demolition work can move forward.
