A mix of the good, the needs and the challenges was brought forth at a goal setting session held at Marshalltown City Hall Wednesday by the Mayor, Councilpersons, Department Heads and facilitator Bruce Bernard. There were some positive and negative things mentioned in a budget examination for 2017 by City Administrator Jessica Kinser, the residential rollback numbers have increased one point three percent from last year, and tax increment financing could be going up, while there will be higher costs and hotel/motel tax revenues will likely be lower, plus a lower estimate of road use tax money from the state of Iowa. There were a number of positive things brought up including the police and fire station project, new Sunday hours at the library and the housing and dilapidated buildings project, community and cultural pride, new leadership and involvement of more younger people in governmental affairs. Among the visioning subjects that hopefully could be done by the year 2020 is the possibility of applying again for All American City status for the city, improvements to the airport area north of the city including runway expansion and construction of a newer, larger hanger for the facility, continued removal of dilapidated houses or buildings and the completion of trail projects including the Iowa River Trail and links to existing trails in the area. This was the 6th year that the city conducted a goal setting session using a facilitator to help guide them along.
