The Marshalltown City Council has voted to accept a payment from the insurance company for the Senior Citizens building, damaged in the tornado. The expectation is that the city will raze the building to make way for future development.

Citizen comments centered on why not take a larger settlement from the insurance company and repair the facility. Ward One Councilor Sue Cahill noted that with the city losing money on the building even before the tornado, keeping in mind the cost to bring the building up to code even after it might be repaired, was not fiscally wise.

Later in the meeting, after the council voted to accept the cash payout, the decision was made to ask for proposals on the land on which the building sit, along with two other surrounding parcels. Housing and Community Development Director Michelle Spohnheimr told the Council developers had approached the city about projects on those sites, along with the parking lot across from the Orpheum on East Main Street.
