State officials cancel legislative hearing again

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For the second consecutive day officials in the Iowa Department of Administrative Services have told legislators investigating use of state money to pay former workers for silence they wouldn't appear to answer questions.

Senate Oversight Committee Chairwoman Janet Peterson says two DAS administrators were asked to appear for a Thursday afternoon hearing but sent a message Wednesday night they would not show up.

She says discussions will be held about whether it's time for the committee to exercise subpoena power if Gov. Terry Branstad's administration continues to avoid legislative oversight.

Petersen says she's also hoping to release documents that reflect Branstad's office conducted only a cursory investigation into the payments for silence in settlement agreements with former workers.

Spokesmen for the DAS and Branstad did not immediately reply to messages.
