Duane Deldon Meyer, age 88, was born on a farm in Holland, Iowa in Grundy County on January 6, 1932. Private Family Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 19, 2020. A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown at a later date. Memorials can be directed to First United Methodist Church of Marshalltown, the Iowa River Hospice, and the Marshalltown Community School District Foundation. Duane attended Colfax No. 4 and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1950. He attended the Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) and received a BA-MA-MA Plus 30 hours in Education. His teaching career started at Anson Jr. High in 1956. In 1960 he became principal of Franklin Elementary in Marshalltown. He greatly enjoyed his 40-year career as an educator at Franklin, Glick, and Rogers elementary schools. These years were the most wonderful years of his lifetime and he has always praised his teacher staffs and the schools he was a part of.

Duane was a lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association. He was treasurer of Sugar Creek Associate townhomes. He was a faithful member and Sunday school teacher of adults at First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. He was also a member of a promise keeper small group. His life as a Christian is his hope for everyone to experience. His favorite bible verse was ‘BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.” Duane was blessed in a deep and abiding faith in God. Duane was proud of his German heritage. He liked a good card game and Erma’s potato salad.

 

Duane is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erma (Ruter) Meyer and their children Perry J Meyer (married to Jeri Ann Meyer) of Waukee, IA and Randy J Meyer (married to Angela Meyer) of Overland Park, KS. He has great admiration for his grandchildren: Matt (Lindsey) Meyer of Centennial, CO, Ryan (Katie) Meyer of Cedar Falls, IA, Emily (Chad) Neleman of Urbandale, IA, Drew (Kersee) Meyer of Overland Park, KS, Jake (Marisa) Meyer of Overland Park, KS, and Nate Meyer of Overland Park, KS. His wonderful great grandchildren are Ava, Bennett and Carly Meyer (Ryan and Katie), Jackson Meyer (Matt and Lindsey), Louie Neleman (Emily and Chad), and one on the way in August (Drew and Kersee). Duane is preceded in death by his parents, Peter J and Reka, three sisters and husbands, Erma’s parents, and her fourteen Aunts and Uncles.
