Bernita R. Zitzow, 85, of Marshalltown, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, December 20, 2021 in the comfort of her home.

A funeral service for Bernita will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens followed by a luncheon back at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 27, 2021 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bernita’s memory. Born Bernita Ruth Nuese on February 20, 1936 in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Carl and Emma (Wolken) Nuese. She grew up on a farm south of Dillon and graduated from Ferguson High School. On May 20, 1956, she was united in marriage to Richard Louis Zitzow at Trinity Lutheran Church of Dillon. Together they made their home in Marshalltown, where they raised their two children. Bernita was a loving wife and mother and worked very hard at making a good home for their family. She enjoyed gardening, canning and feeding the birds. She and Richard were members of the National Camping and Hiking Association and she enjoyed camping and traveling with family and friends. Faith was important to Bernita and she was active in teaching Sunday school, attending Bible class and was a member of LWML at Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Ron (Beth) Zitzow of Muscatine and Renee (Keven) Kirk of Marshalltown and four grandchildren: Kathryn Zitzow, Kyle Kirk, Rebecca Zitzow and Vanessa (Steve) Bruening.

In eternal life, Bernita has been reunited with her husband of 64 years, Richard, who passed earlier this year; her parents and three brothers: Marvin, George and Leo Nuese.
