Lyla Doris Kouba, 93, of Marshalltown, passed away Sunday evening, April 23, 2023 at Southridge Specialty Care, under the care of her loving family and St. Croix Hospice.

 

Memorial services for Doris will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation will start prior to the service; beginning at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family. Doris Hammond was born on November 7, 1929 in New Castle, Nebraska to James and Opal (Johnson) Hammond. She graduated from Montour High School in 1947. Doris was united in marriage to George Kouba on December 13, 1947 in Marshalltown.

 

Doris was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 29, 1972. She loved reading and studying her Bible every day.

 

She had previously worked for Fisher Governor, Kresge and cleaned businesses and homes until she was 80 years old. Doris enjoyed square dancing, roller skating and bowling. She was an excellent cook and baker and will be remembered for her homemade noodles and cinnamon rolls. Doris also was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed going shopping at Goodwill. Doris will especially be remembered for having a good sense of humor, being generous, giving and loving toward every member of her family.

 

Doris is survived by her children: Kitty Choate of Le Grand, Patricia Kouba of Marshalltown, Daniel (Kathy) Kouba of Melbourne, Sally (Scott) Randall of Marshalltown and Jennifer (Emil) Ramirez of Plano, Texas. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.

 

Doris is preceded in death by her son: Timothy Kouba; parents: James and Opal Hammond; grandson: Nathan Kouba; great grandchildren: Tanden Williams and Chloey Kline. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Melba Simmons, Lois Scott and James Hammond and her son-in-law: Jody “Perry” Choate.
