A report from the Iowa State Patrol released today concludes that Benajmin Beary, 25, of Knoxville, merged onto I-80 at the Grand Prairie Parkway interchange and began driving the wrong direction on Interstate 80 due to his high level of impairment.

Toxicology reports also say that Beary’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.223 percent at the time of the crash. This report also indicated the recent use of marijuana by Mr. Beary.

Based on the investigation of the scene and an examination of the vehicles, authorities concluded that Mr. Beary was traveling at a speed of approximately 102 mph when his car collided with the Des Moines Police Department SUV carrying officers Carlos Puente-Morales and Susan Farrell and inmate Tosha Hyatt. All four people involved in the crash were killed.
