The Villager Apartment building was knocked down by a demolition backhoe Thursday less than a week removed from being heavily damaged by fire in downtown Marshalltown. Construct was doing the work with the Marshalltown Fire Department providing support by misting the property for asbestos protection. There were spectators and Captain Michael Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department on hand to keep those watching from going beyond barricades that were put up. Captain Hanken said gawkers are a problem anytime a public spectacle like this takes place. There were even people parked in their cars on State Street on the north side of City Hall watching the demolition process.
