The Iowa Utilities Board was in Marshalltown Tuesday and held a public hearing on a proposed rate increase made by Alliant Energy. The event was held at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Marshalltown. The company wants to raise rates to help pay for upgrades made in the last several years including the Marshalltown Generating Station. Company spokesman Justin Foss says the gas powered Sutherland Generating Station on the east side of Marshalltown will be shutting down and closing toward the end of the month of June. Employees who work there will be given the opportunity to retire, go elsewhere in the company or make a career change. The Sutherland Generating Station has been operating at that location for quite some time.
