The Marshalltown City Council has paved the way for the go ahead on activity for the police and fire station building project. Bids will be due on July 18 for demolition and earth moving at the site. Money is also in place for the removal of asbestos from the former Knights of Columbus building, and the land has been rezoned as well. There was some concern from council about the cost of the project so far and the design process, Mayor Jim Lowrance says steps will be taken to make sure council is informed about those things. If all were to go well activity could begin at the site by August. In other action council took steps to remove the traffic light on South 18th Avenue, that process will be underway soon. Businessman Garrett Goodman will purchase land at South First Street and West Madison Streets that is abandoned in hopes of building a music and entertainment facility. There will be construction activity along the Iowa River Trail between 12th and Summit Streets as work on the trail evolves.
