The Ames school district says it will address reports of racial chants being yelled from the Ames student section during Tuesday night’s substate final boys’ basketball game against Des Moines North as a teachable moment.
District spokesman Eric Smidt told the Ames Tribune there were no specific students that were identified yelling the chants, but that it was instead a collective group.
As for responding to the situation, Smidt said AMes High Principal Spence Evans will be meeting with high school student leaders and student groups to have a conversation to take a look at it using Critical Consciousness, an initiative the district has been working on recently with Iowa State University professionals.
