Sally, a category 1 hurricane, has made landfall along the central Gulf Coast region of the U.S. Hazards along and near Sally’s path include historic rainfall (10 to 20 inches, with isolated totals near 30 inches), a dangerous storm surge (6 to 9 feet from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Mobile Bay, Alabama), wind damage consistent with a low-end hurricane, and isolated tornadoes. However, Sally’s primary rain and wind impacts should unfold east of major rice and cotton production areas in the Mississippi Delta—and west of important crop areas in the Atlantic coastal plain.
