An extension manure management specialist has some advice for farmers planning to apply fertilizer this fall.

Melissa Wilson with the University of Minnesota says this is a good time to look over manure application equipment.

“Make sure you have your safety plan in place in case something goes wrong. And if you’re applying pretty early, consider putting on a cover crop or denitrification inhibitor.”

She tells Brownfield that will help preserve nitrogen if soil temperatures remain warm.
