Hurricane Delta is forecast to charge northward toward the central Gulf Coast of the U.S., with landfall expected in Louisiana on Friday. The possibility exists that Delta could affect parts of southwestern Louisiana that are still recovering from Category 4 Hurricane Laura, which struck in late August. Unharvested Mississippi Delta crops in the hurricane’s path will be vulnerable to quality degradations and—in extreme cases of high winds and flooding—destruction. Open-boll cotton will be particularly susceptible to damage, but crops such as rice and soybeans may also be harmed.
