A bipartisan group of 50 senators is asking US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to begin formal trade talks with Taiwan.

In a letter, the senators say Taiwan is longstanding economic partner and now is the time to begin the formal process of negotiating a comprehensive trade agreement with the country.

They say a trade agreement would promote security and economic growth for the US, Taiwan, and the Indo-Pacific as a whole.
