US wheat farmers are the latest victims in a trade battle with the European Union.
On November 10, the European Commission issued a 25% import duty on several US goods including non-durum wheat. US Wheat Associates reports the biggest impact has been to hard red spring wheat as EU customers regularly import about 300,000 metric tons per marketing year, making it a top 10 destination for wheat from the Northern Plains.
US Wheat Associates says EU customers are also taking a hit from the market disruption as they have come to depend on high protein hard red winter wheat for valuable products like holiday breads and pizza dough.
