The USDA’s latest hogs and pigs report signals some contraction in the US hog herd.
The total number of hogs and pigs in the US is 77.5 million, that’s down 1 percent from a year ago and down 1 percent from September 1. Market hog inventory declined 1 percent from last quarter and last year. Breeding inventory was down 3 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the previous quarter.
The September through November 2020 pig crop and the sows farrowed are both down 1 percent from 2019.
