South Dakota’s winter wheat crop is in significantly worse condition than this time last year because of low soil moisture levels.
The USDA says 32% of the crop is called good, compared to 76% good to excellent this time last year, and while 47% of this year’s crop is called fair, that will decline if dry conditions persist.
More than 60% of the South Dakota’s top and subsoil are short of moisture, compared to nearly none of the state a year ago.
