Vermeer is celebrating fifty years since designing the first big round baler. The machine came about when a friend of Gary Vermeer considered leaving the cow/calf business because he couldn’t get help putting up square bales, according to Bret Julian, director of sales for Vermeer.
“As the story goes, he and a person at Vermeer basically got down on the shop floor and drew out what a round baler should look like,” Julian told Brownfield Ag News.
