Taiwan is facing a referendum in the next six months on allowing U.S. meat containing ractopamine to be imported.

Taiwan’s president issued an executive order in August allowing pork and beef imports containing the growth and leanness feed additive to be imported beginning this year. The lifted ban caused several protests in Taiwan citing health concerns.

Reports say the decision to allow ractopamine in meat exports was done to create a path for a free trade agreement between Taiwan and the U.S.
