John Deere is showcasing new “Sight and Spray” technology at its research farm in central Iowa this week.

John Deere application products marketing manager Joel Basinger says Deere’s new 400 and 600 Series sprayers have dozens of optical cameras that analyze the soil attached to the booms.

“And when it sees a green object like a weed in the field, it identifies that, tells the processor that it needs to spray, and activates the nozzle just above that weed and hits it, all (while) traveling 12 miles per-hour.”

In testing on fallow ground in North America and Australia, he tells Brownfield “Sight and Spray” reduced herbicide usage 77 percent on average.
