The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) is investigating the discovery of cattle remains scattered across two farm fields near Council Bluffs in southwest Iowa.

Keely Coppess with IDALS tells Brownfield the department is working with the Iowa DNR after complaints about Omaha meatpacker Feedlot Services Company and the spreading of “paunch manure.”

The company holds a license that allows it to sell or distribute registered fertilizers or soil conditioners.  But Coppess says paunch manure, the partially digested contents of the stomachs of slaughtered animals, is not defined as either under Iowa law.
