The outlook for most crop farmers has improved dramatically over the past year.

Austin Charlson, who grows corn and soybeans near Belmond in north-central Iowa, says the rally in commodity prices has him cautiously optimistic.

“I guess I’ve kind of learned over the years to not get too excited, but I have a lot better feeling going into this year. I’ve been a lot more forward-thinking with marketing and taking advantage of the prices we’ve got now.”

He tells Brownfield the big market caveats at this point are the size of the South American crop and how many acres get planted in the U.S.
