The U.S. Senate Ag Committee has passed the bipartisan Growing Climate Solutions Act at a hearing Thursday.

Co-sponsor Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, wants the bill to provide transparency between farmers and carbon credit users and discourage vertical integration. “I think we need to take into consideration what farmers have done already,” he says.

Chair Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, says the legislation addresses those issues. “The reason we’re setting up this process at USDA, with maximum producer input, is to really address those issues and I really share your concerns,” she says.
