The National Weather Service says it was a very dry April for the Upper Missouri River basin. The most recent Drought Monitor lists 74% of the basin as abnormally dry or worse.

Kevin Lau with the Missouri River Basin forecast center says cooler temperatures, however, are helping, “Those cool temperatures have really saved some peoples’ bacon in terms of not getting as much evaporation going and in plants transpirating moisture out into the atmosphere as we would normally see.”

He says the outlook is for temperatures around normal starting next week – trending warmish in the west and coolish in the east.
