A new farmer-financed port is open along the Missouri River in Iowa.
A 47-hundred-member cooperative based in Fort Dodge, Iowa has invested in the newly constructed barge loading and unloading terminal at its site near Blenco, Iowa, making it the most northern port on the Missouri River.
Mike Steenhoek with the Soy Transportation Coalition was at the ribbon cutting Thursday with Governor Reynolds and Iowa Ag Secretary Naig.
Steenhoek tells Brownfield Ag News, “I just really comment NEW Cooperative for making this investment, being able to provide that access to the inland waterway system which will then connect with our export region by New Orleans on the lower part of the Mississippi River and then on to a wide variety of export markets.”
He tells Brownfield the facility will accommodate 240-thousand tons of soybeans, corn, DDGs, dry fertilizers and more each year – both incoming and outgoing, “We have seen some increased volumes moved on the Missouri River as of late.
