A strong cold front crossed the northern Plains on Thursday, sparking a round of strong to locally severe thunderstorms, featuring damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. This outbreak followed Tuesday’s severe weather, which produced hail up to 4 inches in diameter in eastern Montana. For Friday, the threat of strong thunderstorms will shift into the upper Midwest and gradually diminish. Rainfall accompanying the storms could total an inch or more in a few spots, mainly in the Dakotas.
