During the next several days, there will be several opportunities for rainfall in the Midwest; 5-day totals could reach 1 to 3 inches in many locations. Meanwhile, tropical development remains likely over the Gulf of Mexico, as a broad area of low pressure begins to drift northward. Regardless of organization, tropical showers should reach the U.S. Gulf Coast Friday. Five-day rainfall in the southeastern U.S. could total 4 to 8 inches or more, especially from near the mouth of the Mississippi River into the southern Appalachians.
