The Colorado Supreme Court unanimously voted to block an unprecedented measure that would have criminalized historic farming and ranching practices across Colorado, from proceeding. Initiative 2021-21 #16 (the PAUSE Act) would have changed statutory state language to define widely-used animal husbandry practices as “cruelty to animals”.
The Court ruled the citizen-led ballot initiative was incorrectly given a green light by the State Title Board.
According to the Colorado Livestock Association, Initiative 16 contained multiple subjects, and given its complexity could mislead voters when they cast their ballots.
