USDA reporters say last week’s rains improved topsoil moisture levels statewide, but the state is still drier than the five-year average. Topsoil is now reported as 67% adequate for moisture with 19% short and 5% surplus. Subsoil levels are 63% adequate, 23% short, and still 11% very short on moisture.
The second cutting of alfalfa hay is underway in many areas, with 29% of the second crop cut. The hay condition is rated 62% good to excellent, up three points after last week’s rain.
