The ridge of high pressure contributing to record-setting temperatures in the Northwest will begin to shift eastward, resulting in heat returning late in the week across the northern Plains and far upper Midwest. Meanwhile, much of the western U.S. will continue to experience above-normal temperatures. Farther east, the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic hot spell will end later in the week, following the passage of a cold front. Five-day rainfall associated with the front could reach 1 to 3 inches or more along and south of a line from the southern Plains to southern New England.
