The lead agronomist for Peterson Farms Seed says dryness has accentuated planting mistakes.

Rick Swenson tells Brownfield moisture tends to cover up problems that are probably out there every year.

“Depth, spacing, population, you name it. There’s a lot of things out there, especially the depth. I saw a lot of that this year and have been getting complaints in the last couple weeks about some fields. We saw tassels showing up on the 6th (of July) already, and there’s a whole bunch of plants plants throughout that field that still haven’t tasseled yet.”

He traces the unevenness to very slight variances in planting depth.
