A storm system front crossing the nation’s mid-section will reach the central Appalachians by Friday before weakening and meandering northeastward. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches or more across the eastern half of the country, except in the upper Great Lakes region and across Florida’s peninsula. Some 2- to 4-inch amounts may occur in the middle and northern Atlantic States. In contrast, little or no precipitation will occur during the next 5 days from central and southern California to the southern High Plains.
