Most dairy product production was down on the year for the month of September except for cheese.

Total cheese production was 1.14 billion pounds, up 3.3 percent on the year and marginally below the prior month. Italian cheese production was up 3.5 percent on the year and slightly on the month while American cheese was up more than five percent on year but down nearly one percent on the month.

Butter production totaled 143 million pounds, down nearly five percent from the prior year and three percent from last month.
