A southwest Iowa farmer says harvest is slow going but it’s for “the best reason possible.”

John Tiarks farms around 1,300 acres of corn and soybeans near Underwood.

“We’ll probably be as late with harvest this year as we’ve been, but we are raising the crop of a lifetime in this area.”

He tells Brownfield corn has performed remarkably well considering how dry the growing season began.

“Improvements in yield that nobody could’ve substantiated when everything was so dry when (the crop) went into the ground early this year.”

He says with a couple hundred acres of corn left to harvest, they are also busy putting cattle on stalks and applying fall fertilizer.
