The Michigan Senate has approved legislation that continues the state’s voluntary environmental stewardship for farmers.

Thursday lawmakers approved Senate Bill 494 introduced by Michigan Senate Ag Committee Chair Kevin Daley.

The bill, which renews current fertilizer and pesticide fees paid by farmers and agribusinesses to fund the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program through 2025, is now headed to the House Appropriations Committee.

The legislation creates the Environmental Assurance Advisory Council to provide recommendations and incentives to increase participation in the program and creates the Freshwater Protection Fund in the State Treasury for emergency response to water contamination as well as assistance to help with disposal and recycling programs.
