Occasional temperatures of -20°F or lower will persist through New Year’s weekend in parts of the North, mainly from Montana to Minnesota. Meanwhile, cold air will continue push deeper into the western U.S., preceded by widespread rain and snow showers. During the mid- to late-week period, a significant surge of moisture should lead to heavy rain and snow from central and southern California into the Southwest. Toward week’s end, the threat of sub-freezing weather could reach into normally temperate areas, including California’s San Joaquin Valley and parts of the Desert Southwest.
