Later Wednesday, heavy showers and locally severe thunderstorms may strike the interior Southeast. Meanwhile, a storm system near the central California coast will drift southward through New Year’s Eve, reaching Baja California before turning northeastward. In southern California, the storm could result in flash flooding, mainly on December 29-30, as well as mountain snow. Significant rain and snow will also fall in the Southwest, especially on December 31, while some light but highly beneficial precipitation may occur on the central and southern High Plains.
