Organic farmer BJ McNeil says his first season of growing hemp taught him and his family a lot about what to do and what to avoid doing the next time. “We didn’t know when we’re supposed to harvest hemp,” McNeil told Brownfield Ag News. “It’s kind of a feel; it’s an art.”
McNeil decided to grow industrial hemp after it became legal in his home state of South Dakota. He planted just before five of the driest weeks in the state’s history, resulting in uneven germination and maturity.
