A wetter than normal December is having an effect on Ohio’s winter wheat crop.

The USDA says rainfall was almost an inch above usual levels with heavy rainfall in much of the state leaving fields saturated, delaying the very tail end of the 2021 harvest, limiting fieldwork, and causing ponding in some fields.

49% of Ohio’s winter wheat crop is called good to excellent, 12% less than the previous update in late November, with 36% in fair shape, 10% higher.
