A dry winter is sapping soil moisture levels in South Dakota.

The USDA says most of the state still has adequate soil moisture levels, but the percentage of areas called short to very short rose over the past month, with parts of the state seeing a similar drought impact being experienced large portions of Plains.

31% of South Dakota’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, 7% less than last month, with 60% called fair, 11% more than in December, and 9% is rated poor to very poor, 4% lower.
