The nation’s cattle producers are in Houston, Texas this week to set policy for their industry and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says there is no shortage of topics to discuss.
Ethan Lane is the vice president of government affairs with NCBA says there are multiple aspects of the supply chain that producers want to address. “Transportation, driver shortages, shipping container issues,” he says. “I think there are a lot of different segments of the cattle and beef supply chain on the cattle producers’ side that are looking forward coming to Houston trying to find some paths forward.”
He tells Brownfield members have continued their work finding a solution to address the price imbalance in the cattle markets. “Are we going to kind of continue to agree with where we’ve been and where Farm Bureau now is about a need for a lot of these solutions but not a mandate,” he says. “Or are our affiliates going to come to this meeting and decide it’s time to relook at this mandate concept.”
Lane says there’s because there are so many opinions on the cash trade mandate, the goal is to find common ground and a path forward that can be communicated to Capitol Hill and lawmakers who are trying to find a solution.
