A Kansas cattleman says a producer-owned processing facility could help bring more transparency to the cattle markets.
Steve Macke operates a large feedlot in Northeast Kansas near Seneca and says the Iowa-based plant near Council Bluffs would give more leverage to producers. “I think it’s a good idea. I think we need to increase kills pace, packer space and slaughter space and do something to help the market out.”
Cattlemen’s Heritage is planning to build a $450 million plant in Mills County that would process 1,500 head of cattle per day and come online in 2023.
