For the remainder of Thursday, a significant winter storm will unfold across the nation’s mid-section, with disruptive snow accumulations spreading from the central Plains into the lower Great Lakes region. Just south of the axis of heavy snow, a band of mixed precipitation—including freezing rain—may cause travel difficulties and electrical outages. Meanwhile, heavy rain (locally 1 to 2 inches or more) in the Ohio Valley could trigger flash flooding, while locally severe thunderstorms may sweep across the South.
