For the remainder of Monday, numerous showers and locally severe thunderstorms will affect the Atlantic Coast States, with a secondary area of isolated thunderstorms expected across the Plains.  During the mid- to late-week period, showers will broadly affect the northern half of the U.S., while hot, dry weather will dominate the South.  Five-day rainfall could reach 1 to 2 inches or more across the North and from the Mississippi Valley eastward.
