Blazing heat in the South, particularly across Texas, will ease late in the week. Meanwhile, cool air will settle across the North, with weekend frost and freezes possible across the northwestern half of the Plains and far upper Midwest. Scattered, late-week frost may also occur in parts of the interior Northwest. Farther south, mostly dry weather will prevail during the next 5 days from California to the southern High Plains. However, frequent showers should occur across the North and throughout the eastern half of the U.S., with 5-day rainfall totals reaching 1 to 2 inches or more in many locations.
