Early this week, a storm system emerging from the western U.S. should provide much-needed precipitation across the central and southern Plains, although rain will arrive too late for some drought-ravaged winter grains. Five-day rainfall could reach 1 to 4 inches on the southern Plains. Early next week, rain will again overspread much of the Midwest. In contrast, dry weather will prevail during the next 5 days across California, the Great Basin, and much of the Southwest.
