A strong ridge of high pressure will retrograde, or shift westward, resulting in extreme heat expanding northward across the Great Plains by week’s end. In fact, weekend temperatures should reach 100°F or higher as far north as the Dakotas. Meanwhile, the middle Atlantic and Midwestern States will get a short reprieve from hot, humid conditions. By early next week, however, hot weather will make another eastward push, with 100-degree temperatures potentially returning across the southern and western Corn Belt.
